Meet Tiyiselani Nkuna, GirlCode beneficiary, past hackathon participant and a web technical at Discover digital. Her future hope is to be an automation tester.
Please tell us a little bit about yourself?
I am Tiyiselani, also known as LadyTee. I studied IT at Jeppe college, competed in 2014, and worked as an intern in web and app development at SCI-Bono. I’m currently doing my final year in Bcom IT management at Mancosa and working as a web technical at Discover digital.
Walk us through your career journey and how you got into I.T?
After my college diploma, I was not sold into Tech, then I got a learnership at Sci-Bono, and that’s when I started to code. After my learnership, I got a job at Discover digital as a system administrator for a 12 months contract. I then worked for RQTech as a Jnr Developer for 3-months. “I normally say I went for a maternity leave” because, after 3- months, I went back to Discover Digital and continued working there. I was also part of GirlCode Java and Web Development Bootcamp.
When did you know you wanted to be in IT?
Sometime in 2015, after my learnership programme with Sci-Bono.
What do you know now that you wish you knew when you were younger?
I wish someone had introduced me to Automation testing sooner. I believe I could have been far with my career right now.
What is your motto in life?
Nobody owes you anything in this world, nobody is coming to rescue you. You’ve got to do it yourself.
What do you hope to leave behind as your legacy?
I want to leave applications/ programmes that will help younger girls discover their careers, mostly in rural areas. Many girls end up in the wrong field because of a lack of knowledge. It is my prayer to introduce technology to young girls.
Our future growth is limited by a chronic shortage of skills and lack of women in tech. This gap isn’t just bad for women, its bad for business.
